Principal's Message Message from our Director, Karen Wheeler-Anderson
Dear Parents or Guardians:
It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm to welcome you to Frederick Douglass Academy Middle School [FDAMS] for the 2008-2009 school year! We hope that you have had time to relax this summer because this coming school year promises to be exciting, challenging and rewarding. It is my honor to recognize our first 8th grade culminating class, many of whom helped to charter Frederick Douglass Academy Middle School and welcome our 7th grade students new and returning as well as our new 6th grade students joining us!
We want your child to be happy and successful at Frederick Douglass Academy Middle School and believe that you play a key role. That role is to continually support and show interest in your child’s education. The child who knows that his or her family is interested in and supports the school program will almost always have fewer problems in school and will enjoy greater success.
Frederick Douglass Academy Schools follow the View Park Preparatory model, and we were the fourth and fifth schools opened by the Inner City Education Foundation [ICEF] family of public charter schools. FDAS will continue ICEF’s track record of success and establish the highest standards and expectations for student achievement, which have distinguished ICEF Schools since their inception in 1999.
All ICEF schools follow the Accelerated Schools model, which teaches to the top 25% of students in each class. Frederick Douglas Academy Schools will employ “accelerated” teaching methods for disadvantaged students that are normally reserved for the gifted.
We hope you will take time to read and review this handbook with your child. The information outlined in this handbook will give you and your family an overview / understanding of the basic philosophy of our school and the knowledge needed to help your child have a positive experience at Frederick Douglass Academy.
This school year Frederick Douglass Academy Middle School is located at 3202 West Adams Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, in the building behind Apostolic Faith Church. We are currently sharing the space with the Frederick Douglass Academy High School. In September of 2009, we will make our final move to our permanent home at 3200 West Adams Blvd.
Please sign the Parent & Student Handbook Acknowledgment Form located on the last page, acknowledging that you are in receipt of the Frederick Douglass Academy School Handbook and will read it in its entirety and understand and agree to its contents. There are two form located on the last page; please sign one and return.
Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year! We are looking forward to a great year!
